Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone produced by the body's adrenal glands. The body uses DHEA to make androgens and estrogens, the male and female sex hormones. DHEA levels peak at about age 25, then decrease steadily with age. Over time, a woman’s ovaries gradually decrease producing these hormones, causing vaginal lining shrinkage and drying due to decreased healthy secretions. Muscle loss (or vaginal atrophy) also occurs. The lining becomes less elastic and thin, causing irritation and discomfort. The ovaries predominantly stop producing estrogen after menopause. When DHEA is directly applied to the vagina, it helps produce estrogen which in turn, helps reduce vaginal dryness and irritation, therefore decreasing pain during intercourse. In 2018, a 12-week study found that vaginally applied DHEA in lubricant/moisturizer provided relief from vaginal atrophy symptoms such as vaginal dryness, itching and leaking.

Aloe Barbadensis, or Aloe has long been admired for its beneficial healing properties. A natural moisturizer and humectant, aloe is also non-comedogenic, so it doesn’t block the skin’s pores.
